What is omega 6 linoleic acid?

Omega 6 linoleic acid is a fatty acid. There are two different types of omega 6 - long chain (GLA) and short chain (LA), we create the long chain from the short chain.

Why does it matter to me?

  • Omega 6 has been shown to play a very important role in heart and brain function.

  • Long chain omega 6 (GLA) has been shown to be anti-inflammatory and should help with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis - see link below.

  • Studies have shown that omega 6 is critical to skin health.

Why do I need a balance of omega 6 and omega 3?

Scientists generally agree that a balance, between omega 6 and 3, of 4:1 would be very beneficial.

The typical western diet has shown ratios of between 20:1 and 50:1 which it is now thought to lead to stimulating chronic inflammation and diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis and autoimmune diseases.

Scientists generally agree that focusing on increasing our intake of omega 3 and eating foods with a healthy ratio of omega 6 to 3 (2:1) will help re-balance our diets and be more effective in protecting our health.

Why eating grass fed animals is better

Eating grass fed animals for example will give you a ratio of 2:1 of omega 6 to 3 as opposed to corn fed animals which can give a ratio of 9:1.

How does processing food affect omega 6?

Whilst this fatty acid is essential for our health, recent research has shown that the omega 6 found in high amounts in processed food can be damaging, particularly from the refined and heated corn and sunflower oil used in food processing.

While there is disagreement among scientists as to the ideal amount of omega 6 they generally agree that the intake of omega 6 from refined and heated (processed) oils needs to be greatly reduced.

NB: Omega 6 is an area of ongoing research and we will keep you updated.
