Isoflavones / phytoestrogens

Health benefits of Isoflavones / phytoestrogens:
There is a lot of interest in isoflavones, (mainly found in soy products), for the prevention of breast and prostate cancer along with relieving the symptoms of menopause

Description

See the bottom of this page for the ingredients highest in soy isoflavones.

What are isoflavones?

Isoflavones are plant compounds in soy that produce an estrogen like effect in our bodies.

Why does it matter to me?

A recent study involving 5,042 female breast cancer survivors in China, found that consumption of isoflavone-rich soy foods was associated with a 29% lower risk of death and a 32% lower risk of cancer re-occurring.

Several studies have shown that a soy isoflavone intake of 10 or more milligrams a day led to a reduced risk of the re-occurrence of breast cancer.

Some studies have shown that soy isoflavones have a potential role in holding back the progression of prostate cancer.

Consumption of soy isoflavones may also stimulate bone formation.

There are numerous continuing studies into the benefits of isoflavones and some of the results are conflicting, we will keep you posted.

How much should I have?

Recent studies have shown that we need a specific type of bacteria in our gut flora to convert isoflavones to a more active form for health benefits. This specific bacteria is yet to be identified and we will keep you updated - see link below to the NCBI report.

In the absence of an RDA we have created a CYF starting guideline of 10mg per day. We have kept this at the lower end due to concerns over high dietary and supplement dosages (see link below). Members can set their own target amounts.
