Lutein and zeaxanthin

Health benefits of Lutein and zeaxanthin:
May protect our eyes from damage and degeneration and contribute to our ability to use skills and memory into old age

The Worlds Science

See the bottom of this page for the ingredients highest in lutein and zeaxanthin What are lutein and zeaxanthin?

Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoid phytochemicals that absorb light; in particular they absorb blue light which may protect our eyes from damage and macular degeneration1

Why does it matter to me?

Whilst still being far from clear cut some research has shown that these two contribute to a lower incidence of age related macular degeneration (failing eyesight)2.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in the retina and lens of the eye. They have been observed to prevent or slow the development of cataracts in people with a diet rich in these carotenoids3.

Lutein may contribute to our ability to continue to use skills, knowledge and experience into old age (crystallized intelligence)4,5

Are there any other benefits?

A recent study has shown that diets rich in lutein and zeaxanthin along with beta carotene, folate and vitamin K1 significantly reduces cognitive decline6

How much do I need?

Recommendations by the UK Government the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society and American Heart Association to consume a variety of fruits and vegetables daily are aimed, in part, at increasing intakes of lutein and zeaxanthin.

In the absence of an RDA we have created a CYF starting guideline of 2,100mcg per day for adults. Members can set their own target amounts.
